What really constitutes as watching TV ... ?

After saying good bye to a friend that was over for dinner tonight, I walked back inside where my wife was at work, and my daughter was sound asleep, there was an eerie silence about the place.....no TVs on just the soft hiss of the gas heater burning away one of our natural resources.

So the question that I ask is. What really constitutes as watching TV?

GRANTED .. sitting down wasting your life away in front of the "BOX" would be considered to be watching TV.

Having the TV on while you are working away in the kitchen? YES or NO.

Having the TV on while you are studying, or trying to? YES or NO (I do concede that this does provide a procrastination opportunity).

Having a TV series playing on DVD in the background while you are working either around the home or in the office? YES or NO.

I would like to know peoples opinions because although I have been trying very hard to adhere to the 2 hours I set myself at the start of this experiment there has been times where I have strayed due to having some sense of company, rather than just silence.

I think that I need to re-discover the radio or create a few playlists in iTunes.

I just toned out while Cougar Town was on next to me while I write this post. OMG I am doing it again ..... Wasting time on TV.

I am trying to do as much as I can at the moment on top of Uni, I have joined a gym and I'm considering joining a grid iron club, to keep my time busy. The problem that I have is that there are no constructive things to do without self motivation after about 8pm at night, which is generally when the TV time wasting kicks in. I know I should be studying but how do I motivate myself to do it? I have even started to go to bed earlier which is SO not like me and not to mention, not helping me be more constructive during this experiment ..... PLEASE does anyone have any suggestions?

I am needing some support........

  1. What kept me off TV? I discovered audio books. As nanny-like as it sounds, I love it. I rediscovered the love for reading when I got stuck onto the Twilight series … which then let me to weekly visits to the library with the little one. I started downloading e-books and audio books. I am a lot more productive when I listen to my audio books. I can hang the washing, mop the floor, fold the clothes whilst listening to my audio books on my mp3 player – absolutely brilliant!
Since the new hobby, I hardly turn on the idiot box…. Unless it’s something I care to watch. TV somehow lures you to plonk yourself onto that soft comfy couch. The next thing you know, you’re munching on a tin of Pringles and a can of Diet Coke?!
I think the biggest downfall in our household is the computer! Our computers are never off. It’s either facebook, emails, chats, downloading movies …. Just something! But, I can’t say that it’s as much a waste of time as watching TV :)
My other motivation to keep the TV off is… god I need the peace and serenity while the little girl is in bed! If there’s nothing to watch leave it off – save some power.
Don’t get me wrong… we still watch movies, TV series and news … just a lot lesser these days.

  2. i have not had a t.v in my house for the last year, people think i'm strange. i am.
I do enjoy watching friends and sex and the city t.v series i have to admit.
but to be honest with you i CANNOT STAND T.V.
Adam, i am so impressed with you considering you have 3 t.v's in your home.
Adam, 8pm onwards should be wind down time. you need to think about YOURSELF and treat yourself to something you enjoy doing ( apart from watching t.v) how about start making a tally of the hours spent not watching t.v. and the energy saved by the t.v not going on.

SOLUTION write a book, and dedicate it to me. photography or not,

my mum wrote us diaries when Louise and i were younger, it had daily events, receipts from the shop. AND LOTS OF PHOTOS... I LOVE THEM. i was so lucky to have a mum that did that.
i wish you all the best.

  3. Cancelled Foxtel for one. I know you don't have foxtel but it has been the best thing we have done for our family. It has reduce TV time drastically.
I have been given a Kindle for my birthday from my wonderful family. I am hooked! I download ebooks onto it, and the screen is more like a book, with no glare. I am reading so much more and more variety than I would normally buy. So it doesn't count as a TV Screen or computer screen!
I generally think when I decided that I was wasting my life on Oprah and Dr Phil after having babies. It was a active decision like quitting smoking, I guess, it was time to say enough is enough. I distract myself. I walk past the TV think "NO I am not turing it on" and go find something else to do. Like walk to the park or work on my hobby or start crossing things off a long list of never ending things that need to be done. If I need to rest and put up my feet I whip out a book or my kindle in my case and sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.
To be honest if I had it my way I would have no TV in my house. We all love it when we go camping and we never ever bring anything electrical and just have the basics. It is relaxing and we all have fun playing games and talking to each other. It brings us closer together. I love the quiet most of all.
